ABOUT ‘A STREET, A TRACK, AN OPEN ROAD’
This DVD has been put together in response to an unusually high number of motorcycle fatalities and accidents (2004/2005). Instead of lecturing people on safety we wanted to present motorcycle training as fun and essential for people of all abilities.

Throughout the footage you will see our 3 riders on a variety of bikes and in different environments. Each of these riders are experts in their own field. So, Chris Walker has to provide instruction to Bob McMillan, (ex-Head of Motorcycles for Honda and rural riding expert) and Steve Manning (ex-courier), in the art of track riding. Chris then has to become a courier for a day under Steve’s tuition and participate in a rural ride out as directed by Bob. They weren’t told what to say or do, you will see them riding as they would normally ride. They all tell me that they have learned something from making this program and they hope that you will by watching it too!

The point of this DVD is not to make you question your confidence and take enjoyment away from you, but to encourage you, whoever you are and whatever you ride to try something new, or improve your already established riding skills. You will enjoy your bike more each time you learn something new, so what are you waiting for? A Street, A Track, An Open Road was launched on 17th February 2005 and adds an entertaining and educational approach to rider development.

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) has produced the DVD to get riders thinking about their own skills and experiences. But this is not a training video. It is a humorous, real life documentary about life on two wheels. Visit stordvd.com to buy the DVD and for more great content, tips, information and links. Three riders committed over a week of their lives to live together, to take part in the film and undertake three different challenges. Viewers will be inspired by the skills of riders including World Super Bike star Chris Walker and Bob McMillan, former head of Honda UK. Suzi Perry also features and narrates the film.

Each rider mentors the other two in their specialist field, to help them develop skills and prepare them to meet an unknown challenge. Three tests were carefully set up: ‘A Day in the Life’, ‘Track Trial’ and ‘Spot the Mistakes’.

A panel of three expert judges, including current WSB champion James Toseland, were on hand to observe the riders and judge both their riding and mentoring ability to find the top dog. It all comes together to provide quality entertainment that gets people thinking about their own riding abilities.

I found the whole thing pretty interesting and informative as well as entertaining. The open road riding stuff was (to me) pretty obvious although worth saying loud and clear. The street riding / town riding (courier style) was just plain scary (I’ve never ridden in London). The track sessions were great. Imagine going round Thruxton being followed by a WSB racer telling you through your headset how fast to go, where to brake, when to gas it, what line to take. Brilliant!

I guess that every rider will find some things on the DVD that are obvious (although worthy of inclusion for the benefit of others). Most riders should also find a few insights and tips from other environments which they can usefully apply in their own riding.

I’ve put together the following clips from the DVD, a very small part of the content, to give you an idea of what it’s about. NB: the DVD image quality is A1 typical DVD quality whereas, needless to say, the quality of the following clips suffers due to the compression process to keep the movie file size down for use on the interweb.
