I'll add more information on tyre repairs / fixing punctures and tyre repair kits as and when I get time!.....meantime have a browse around / search on www.ukGSer.com and or www.ADVRider.com ;-)

BMW used to supply a tyre (tire) puncture repair kit with the R1200GS, note used to! The kit may well still be available to buy from your BMW dealer, part number 711 2332 083 but there are many third party similar and alternative puncture repair kits available.

Here's the instructions that accompany the BMW motorcycle tyre puncture repair kit (larger version of the image here for download/printing;-) and below there's a photo 'how to' article from  ukGSer 'Blue Sweeper' (photos by ukGSer 'Jon')

Fixing a puncture with the BMW repair kit

I've seen some of you asking how to use the BMW puncture repair kit and further questions about it's reliability. So here are a series of pictures (taken by Jon) as I fixed a puncture on his bike in Spain while there in May 2004.

The nail, not much to see! (centre photo)...

Puncture - nail in tyre / tire

Then using the serrated tool in the kit, make the hole left by the nail (foreign object)bigger. It should be about 4mm in diameter when finished.

Next put plenty of glue on the tool tip...

and then fit the tyre / tire plug onto the tool...

Now you need to put plenty of glue onto the tyre plug itself...

Push the tyre plug into the hole in the tyre with the tool...

Pull out the tool which leaves the plug in the tyre...

Wait for a few minutes for the glue to dry and pump up the tyre...

Part of the plug is left protruding from the tyre, cut this off flush with the tyre surface with the supplied knife. The job is done...

Check the tyre pressure again and test for leaks with some soap[y water or the good old 'spit test', you're now ready to ride off.

THIS IS NOT A PERMANENT FIX but Jon did 600 miles before he had a new tyre fitted. I wouldn't recommend that you ride at high speed either;-)
